In July, we celebrated the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This month, September 17 to be precise, we will observe Constitution Day, which marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. And Election Day is less than 60 days away (November 3rd). This convergence of notable events, against the backdrop of ongoing debates over election reform, voting access, and civics education, make this a critical moment to examine the principles and systems that sustain American democracy.

That’s why Braver Angels PA is pleased to be partnering with Millersville University as it hosts its 6th Annual Sustainable Development Goals Conference on Tuesday, September 15th. The conference will focus on Making Democracy Work: Strengthening Institutions, Engaging Communities, Empowering Citizens. This one-day conference will take place at The Ware Center in downtown Lancaster, PA, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, bringing together policymakers, educators, journalists, election officials, and community leaders to discuss how democratic institutions function in practice. 

The day-long event will feature:

• Keynote addresses on election systems and institutional resilience  

• Interactive sessions on election administration, judicial independence, combating misinformation, and civic engagement  

• Panel discussions with election officials, journalists, educators, and legal experts  

• Student voices panel featuring high school and university students on civics education

Among the speakers will be Braver Angels PA Co-Coordinators Dave Wagner and Bill Madway, who will be participating in panel discussion titled Civic Engagement Beyond Voting: Building Social Capital. They will be joined by Stephen Medvic, PhD, Professor of Government and Director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College.

This conference aims to facilitate nonpartisan dialogue on how democratic institutions work in practice – from election administration, voter access, and judicial independence, to civil dialogue, local journalism, and civics education.
